Efremidis

Typography, Branding, Identity

Posters screenprinted A2 on G.F. SMITH Peregrina Majestic 120 GSM

Programme printed on G.F. SMITH Peregrina Classic Metallic silver 250 GSM, Sleeve screenprinted on G.F. SMITH transclear 110 gsm.
The objective of this project was to create an experimental typeface specifically designed for the gallery Efremidis in Berlin. This typeface reflects the gallery’s forward-thinking and contemporary ethos, characterised by its geometric forms and striking contrasts. The typeface has been developed into a logotype that will be utilised throughout various aspects of the gallery's identity. The branding approach seeks to capture the gallery’s unconventional and dynamic programming, also utilizing materials that convey unpredictability.

Rikka Mila

Branding, Identity
One of three identity proposals for contemporary fashion label Rikka Mila. Rikka Mila draw upon european influences while leaning toward pan-African accents throughout their collections. For this proposal the word mark highlights a somewhat afro-futurist edge, through high contrast and a playful energy. The colour palette looks to correspond to this while reflecting the raw colour and emotion of colours and energy across Africa in a contemprary way. The wordmark offers a natural grid system through the R and M, this is utilised through all elements of the identity.

Black Type Designers;  Missing in Action

Editorial

Printed on G.F. SMITH Plike 140gsm and G.F. SMITH Transclear 110 gsm.
The project "Missing in Action" was developed through extensive research and ultimately aims to address the unequal representation of Black designers in the design industry. Inspired by Cheryl D. Holmes-Miller's article "Black Designers: Missing in Action?", this initiative highlights the cultural and historical significance of typefaces created by these designers. The project explores innovative applications and interpretations of these typefaces, positioning them within contemporary or alternative contexts while celebrating their rich origins. Through this work, I seek to raise awareness of the contributions of Black designers and foster a more inclusive narrative within the design community.

Acid House: Are rave flyers a true reflection of their past?

Editorial

Printed on Reused/Offcuts of different G.F. Smith papers
This publication responds to my dissertation, "Acid House: Are Rave Flyers a True Reflection of Their Past?" by using rave flyers to explore key themes from the essay and narrative. Each flyer heading comes directly from the dissertation, the flyers, created in just two days to mirror the fast-paced production of original rave flyers, showcase DIY and copyleft culture. On top of that the publication highlights themes of transcendence, paganism, the impact of ecstasy and music on the subculture amongst others. The essay focuses on the 'golden age' of flyer design from 1988 to 1993 and emphasises the strong link between flyer content and the culture it represents.

Portals

Branding, Identity
Portals is a branding project  for a start up buisness called Portals who restore and renovate 1960's k67 kiosks from former Yugoslavia and activate them in high footfall areas across cities for small buisnesses to rent. The identity is influenced in part by the modularity of the kiosks while also speaking to the increased connectedness that can be seen through the brands and consumer as a result of the nature of the kiosks.

Cognitive Flash

Art Direction, Editorial, Photography
Printed A3 with FE Burman London on 140gsm semi gloss photographic paper, bound with elastic.
The project "Cognitive Flash" began as an exploration of various interpretations of scanner usage. I was captivated by the striking images I generated and sought to extend the scanner's function beyond its conventional purpose. This guide aims to inspire readers to reimagine the use of everyday objects, such as notebooks and scanners, encouraging experimentation beyond their intended functions. Through this project, I have discovered the joy of transforming familiar tools into sources of inspiration. The guide outlines the methods I employed to produce these images, providing readers with a framework to explore their own creative possibilities with various tools and materials.

Movement Systems

Animation
In collaboration with Shimpei Mikami

“Movement Systems” is a digital response to a performance by Studio Wayne McGregor in collaboration with Jamie XX and Olafur Eliasson. In this project, we utilized magnets and iron filings to reflect the dancers' movements, translating them into a graphic representation. The iron filings exhibit a unique “shiver” effect as the magnets pass beneath, providing an intriguing interpretation of the dancers' motion. Exploring the relationship between the physical and digital realms was a central focus for me. Although the output is digital, I am particularly drawn to the organic quality of the movement in the video, which aims to reflect the inherent humanity of the dance.

Data

Motion, Branding, Infographics

This project encompasses a series of animations that visually represent data concerning the decline of two specific species: the monarch butterfly along the Western Coast of North America and the severely diminished population of the rusty patched bumblebee. Each data set has been analyzed and represented with great precision; for instance, the monarch butterfly population is depicted as having only 28,625 pixels remaining, which constitutes just 24% of its original numbers. The animations aim to draw attention to the critical issues facing these species while accurately illustrating the severity of their decline through minimalistic and direct graphics. Accompanying posters further emphasize the challenges these animals encounter, enhancing public awareness of their plight.
